Principles of Magick

by Jean-Pierre Lesault

Nothing is lost, nothing is created, all changes -(Lavoisier: french chemist)

The fundamental principle of this system of magic rests on the following dogmas:

That can seem obscure, but it is in fact very simple:

Example:

A magus wants create an area of heat (1 meter cubed) and 1000 degrees (usual term :fireball). The spell must initially take this energy in the same proportions (1000 degrees on 1 cubic meter = 1 degree on 1000 cubic meters.) Thus, when the magus takes this energy the temperature in a volume of 1000 cubic meters around him goes down 1 degree.

The magus then stores this energy (mana, quintessence, whatever) When the magus release this energy, he/she must do it in the same proportions and to control it (1000 degrees in 1 cubic meter, or 100 degrees in 10 cubic meters, or 10 degrees in 100 cubic meters, etc.) Control enables him to return energy as he wants.

Natural balance is not affected because the debt has been payed.

This example can also apply to the properties reality: If a magus, wishes to apply water properties (liquidification) on an area (1 cubic meter), he/she can apply this property to an object of iron (iron becomes liquid!) or remove it: water without the property becomes vapor (gas) or ice(solid).

A magus who weighs 80kg can take the flying property of a bird (1kg) but will not go very far. It would take the flying properties of 80 birds to be able to fly away!

Control will give the duration of the flight. A control throw is necessary at each turn.

Three skills are involved in the process:

Energy Absorbtion: An opposed test (GM's Discretion) Energy Storage: The more you store, the harder it is to store more Energy Control: Required each turn base (each success above wins a free turn of control, each failure lostes a turn of control) If you lost the first control test, the energy is released as taken previously.

A fourth skill is "built-in": Magical Sense : To be aware of magical manipulations. If we take the first example, to know if the loss of heat is from mother nature or a result of a magical manipulation. This ability is automatic.

Examples of how these skills can be applied to different areas of magical manipulations:

Teleportation

Energy Absorbtion: Spatial properties of the final location is limited to the body of the magus (this location can become non space: be careful!)

Energy Control: Exchange between the actual space location occupied by the magus and the location stored.

Telepathy

Energy Absorbtion: Mental Properties (partial or total)

Energy Control: Exchange between the mental properties (this operation must be reversible)

Time Travel

Energy Absorbtion: Temporal properties (forward or backward) in a defined space. (If you go faster than the actual time the space time around the magus goes slower)

Energy Control: You go foward or backward in time.

You can do virtually anything with this system.
